California Egg Production

egg productionCalifornia’s egg production during March totaled 294 million, up 28 million from February’s production but down 3 million from March 2016. The all layers during the month totaled 12.3 million, up 1 percent from last month, but down 1 percent from March 2016. Eggs per 100 layers during the month were 2,394, compared to 2,178 a month earlier, and 2,402 in March 2016.

U.S. March Eff Production

United States egg production totaled 8.97 billion during March 2017, up 4 percent from last year. Production included 7.84 billion table eggs, and 1.13 billion hatching eggs, of which 1.05 billion were broiler-type and 81.9 million were egg-type. The total number of layers during March 2017 averaged 375 million, up 2 percent from last year. March egg production per 100 layers was 2,392 eggs, up 2 percent from March 2016.

All layers in the United States on April 1, 2017 totaled 375 million, up 2 percent from last year. The 375 million layers consisted of 316 million layers producing table or market type eggs, 55.6 million layers producing broiler-type hatching eggs, and 3.37 million layers producing egg-type hatching eggs. Rate of lay per day on April 1, 2017, averaged 77.3 eggs per 100 layers, up 2 percent from April 1, 2016.

U.S. Egg-Type Chicks Hatched

Egg-type chicks hatched during March 2017 totaled 55.9 million, down 2 percent from March 2016. Eggs in incubators totaled 50.9 million on April 1, 2017, down 2 percent from a year ago.

Domestic placements of egg-type pullet chicks for future hatchery supply flocks by leading breeders totaled 189 thousand during March 2017, up 18 percent from March 2016.

U.S. Broiler-Type Chicks Hatched

Broiler-type chicks hatched during March 2017 totaled 820 million, up 2 percent from March 2016. Eggs in incubators totaled 667 million on April 1, 2017, up 3 percent from a year ago.

Leading breeders placed 8.26 million broiler-type pullet chicks for future domestic hatchery supply flocks during March 2017, up 1 percent from March 2016.

U.S. Turkey Hatchery Production

Turkey eggs in incubators on April 1, 2017, in the United States totaled 28.7 million, down 3 percent from April 1, 2016. Eggs in incubators were down 4 percent from the March 1, 2017 total of 30.0 million eggs.

Turkey poults hatched during March 2017, in the United States totaled 25.6 million, up 8 percent from March 2016. Poults hatched were up 8 percent from the February 2017 total of 23.6 million poults.

The 24.0 million net poults placed during March 2017 in the United States were up 6 percent from the number placed during the same month a year earlier. Net placements were up 9 percent from the February 2017 total of 22.0 million.
