Agri View: Worldwide Food Costs

Everett Griner talks about food costs still rising worldwide in today’s Agri View.

It is generally about the middle of the year when our government’s annual Food Cost Report comes out. Food prices always go up. For many years were accustomed to increases of one and one-half to two percent annually. More recently it has been three and one-half to five percent. We have become accustomed to that too. But we are not by ourselves. Both of our neighbors, Canada and Mexico, are right there with us. Canadians have been told to expect a three to five percent increase this year. Canadians are also fighting a declining currency issue. That will only add to the cost of food. And don’t forget that Canada, like Mexico, imports a great percentage of their food. They have been warned to expect another three to five percent next year. That is a good indication of what we can expect here in America. One thing is for certain. Food is not going to get any cheaper.

That’s Agri View for today. I’m Everett Griner.
