farm bill field hearing debate

Everett Griner talks about the debate beginning on the 2018 Farm Bill in today’s Agri View.

Well Congress is working on the next Farm Bill. It is due next year. That doesn’t mean much though. Because most farm bills are never finished when they are supposed to be. Anyway, there has been little indication as to what will be in the bill. Most farmers expect it will be a review and an update to the current bill. One thing that did emerge is raising the low end of farm income. Agriculture has a high level of low income families. It isn’t something that come about just recently. Nobody mentioned whether Congress’ objective is the farm family itself or if it extends to the migrant worker level. There is much Congress needs to do to bring the current set of farm laws up to date. So, right now, the only positive fact about the 2018 Farm Bill is that Congress has opened debate on it. Don’t be shocked if it doesn’t make it when it is supposed to.

That’s Agri View for today. I’m Everett Griner.
