National Arbor Day

National Arbor Day logoCathy Isom tells us about the National holiday dedicated to planting and caring for some of the Earth’s greatest treasures. That’s coming up on This Land of Ours.

Every last Friday in April is National Arbor Day. It’s a holiday in which individuals and groups are encouraged to plant and care for trees in their community.

Trees provide vital protection for the Earth’s topsoil from erosion, oxygen, and homes for wildlife. They also are a renewable resource that provides a variety of materials for building, fuel and office supplies. They are also very beautiful and can compliment any landscaping, provide shade on a sunny day and improve our quality of life.  Arbor Days have been taking place around the globe since the 18-hundreds. The very first American Arbor Day was originated in Nebraska City, Nebraska, by Journalist J. Sterling Morton. On April 10, 1872, an estimated one million trees were planted in Nebraska. National Arbor Day celebrates all these things and aims for American generations to come to enjoy all the benefits trees have to offer.

When J. Sterling Morton founded Arbor Day back in 1872, his idea was simple—set aside a special day for tree planting. And today, that idea is more important than ever.
