Here is this week’s ‘Fungicide Resistance Management Minute’ brought to you by Corteva. We’re hearing from Lindee Love, Corteva’s Strategic Account Manager in Northern California on what growers should be watching for now.
Q: Lindee, let’s start with almonds. What diseases should producers watch for this season?
A: Tree nut growers at this time probably are going to be looking for signs of shot hole, jacket rot and brachnose with the rainfall events that we’ve had, that’s probably what they’re going to be monitoring for at this point.
Q: And what about for grapes?
A: Right now, we’re still seeing the usual suspects. Grape growers are just getting going. I know the Lodi area has already had budbreak, and they’re starting to see some in Sonoma and Napa County. So, they’re probably gearing up to start their fungicide programs. Typically for the grapes early on in the season, they’re trying to get coverage for powdery mildew.
Q: Now just a reminder for some things that we discussed previously on the Fungicide Resistance Management Minute, why is it important to be paying attention to the frac group?
A: It’s important that you’re rotating the chemistries. If you do consecutive applications with the same group, you can have the disease or the pathogen build resistance and then it will produce a new generation of pathogens that are going to keep continuing to be more resistant. Eventually you lose that mode of action, or that chemistry. So typically, growers or the PCA will come up with a tentative program for the season and then as the season goes and there’s weather conditions, rain, humidity–for pathogen to occur, there has to be the pathogen present, the host available and then also the correct conditions. So, all three of those have to be present for the pathogen to keep reproducing–but basically the grower or the PCA through the season needs to adjust the program as necessary so they can target a specific disease.
Q: Lindee, where can folks get more information?
A: Growers could contact their local Corteva Agriscience representative or visit Corteva.US/fungicideresistance.
Thank you for all the information. That was Lindee Love with this week’s ‘Fungicide Resistance Management Minute’ brought to you by Corteva.
