Break out the grill and grab the buns. Cathy Isom lets you know why you’ll want to get your hands on America’s favorite sandwich today. That’s coming up on This Land of Ours.
America’s favorite sandwich – the hamburger – with a slice of cheese – and all of the trimmings – is being honored today. It’s National Cheeseburger Day. A sandwich favorite that has been enjoyed since the early part of the Roaring 20s era.
Many major fast-food chains and local restaurants will mark the day by offering deals and in some places use their creativity and culinary skills to make new variations on the traditional cheeseburger. This usually involves using premium types of cheese, other meats and a variety of unusual garnishes.
If you make your own cheeseburger, 1/4 pound of 85 percent lean ground beef contains 193 calories. A slice of American cheese will add 50 calories, plus about 117 calories for the bun. However you prefer it, pan-fried, grilled, or flame broiled, don’t forget to top if with your favorite cheese!
