Family run Zacky Farms, known for its turkey production is shuttering its doors after decades of service. The closure of the company’s two plants in Fresno and Stockton will put nearly a thousand people out of a job. Over the years the company has struggled to remain profitable. In a statement, the company noted it will cease operation as of January 2019.
While it’s unclear of the exact reason why the company’s efforts to meet their goals fell though, it could be an example of California’s Proposition 12. Prop. 12 places new standards for housing farm animals and would ban the sale of complying products if the company failed to meet the required measures.
