Producers were reminded at a recent avocado seminar series about the importance of knowing your soil, especially in the hilly areas on the central coast and southern California.
University of California Riverside has been conducting a trial on avocados that has included field studies on irrigation and salinity management and grower questionnaires. Graduate Student Researcher Julie Escalara presented some of the findings from the trial in San Luis Obispo as part of the Avocado Grower Seminar Series, and said there is one key factor all the findings point out. Escalara says not only is there a difference in soil throughout a field, but how that soil interacts with irrigation can widely vary especially in the hilly areas of southern California and the central coast.
