The signs are familiar reading “Food Grows Where Water Flows.” and “No Water-No Jobs.”
The message the same. The cry for water that started months ago in Sacramento continues around the state this week. Today a crowd gathers at Fresno City Hall. It follows yesterday’s packed rally in Firebaugh where a frustrated and nearly desperate crowd of nearly a thousand people told elected officials “It’s time for action.” The message from several people who spoke “We don’t want handouts, we want jobs.” and “Water is the key to those jobs.” Without water farmers will be forced to let tens of thousands of acres go fallow, and that means no work for tens of thousands of people. Anything from workers in the fields and packing houses, to truck drivers and the hundreds of other jobs involved in the ag industry.
