The National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, the National Pork Producers Council and the American Meat Institute all have significant worries about the new Mandatory Country of Origin Labeling program – or M-COOL. The pork producers council says it doesn’t expect M- COOL to satisfy the World Trade Organization, and feels it could bring on retaliation against U.S. pork exports. The NCBA calls M-COOL shortsighted, and says it sets up U.S. cattle producers for financial losses. Meanwhile, the American Meat Institute says the new rule stands to harm American agriculture.
