A major new trade deal expected to finalize this week doesn’t affect California’s second largest nut industry. The new North American Free Trade Agreement, now being called the U.S. Mexico and Canada Agreement (USMCA), is expected to be finalized this week. After months of negotiations, both Mexico and Canada have agreed to sign the three-country deal with the United States.
It’s positive news for an international trade scene that has been tumultuous in 2018 and should increase, or at least maintain, California exports to both countries. That’s good news to American Pistachio Growers Executive Director Richard Matoian who said both markets have increased for them and remain strong.
