In an attempt to lessen the burden on farmers hurt by the trade war with China, USDA offered up a tariff relief package with three main program bundled in. The Market Facilitation Program, the Food Purchase and Distribution Program and the Agriculture Trade Promotion Program. California farmers will likely benefit from the Trade Promotion program that is working to open other foreign markets.
The package which was worth $12 billion, has paid out $837.8 million to farmers, mostly to those by direct payments through the MFP. Ag. Secretary Sonny Perdue said it’s unlikely payments will continue through to the next year.
