It is Spring and time to head to your local Farmers Market. Cathy Isom fills you in about the special produce you’ll find at its very best this time of the year. That’s coming on This Land of Ours.

Spring Produce

When it’s spring, we typically plant our summer and fall fruits and veggies. But let’s not forget those other produce favorites that are ready for us in the spring. And the very best and very fresh will be found at your nearest farmer’s market.  And you won’t want to delay, as some of these won’t be available again until — at best — fall or possibly even until next spring rolls around. Such as artichokes – which hit their stride between March and June; Asparagus, with a short season from late March into April. And Cherries, which start filling produce bins and baskets in April, and are also known to disappear rather quickly. Some other spring fresh favorites, include Fennel, Grapefruit and Kiwi. All three of which have been ready since late winter. Peas go in the ground when its still cold, so they’re at their very best on farmers market stands in the spring. And another special produce you’ll find at its very best this time of year, typically end of April and early May, is Rhubarb.
