
Self-fertile almond varieties are becoming more popular as the first trees in production continue to mature. The Shasta variety was introduced a few years ago and growers are starting to see the tree’s characteristics in the field. Blue Diamond Growers Membership Development Manager Ben Goudie fielded a few questions from growers about the new variety recently, and he said high-density planting probably isn’t an option as the tree is pretty vigorous.
