You have a good vegetable garden. Now you can make it a great vegetable garden. Cathy Isom has tips why you should plant flowers alongside vegetables. That’s coming up on This Land of Ours.
If you’ve never done it before, why not plant flowers alongside the vegetables in your garden? They have a remarkable ability to keep your veggie crop strong and healthy. Not to mention adding that pop of magnificent color. So leave a little extra space for the flowers for their ability to attract bees and other pollinators.
When choosing the right flowers for your vegetable patch, consider these 4 things:
- Bloom time. You’ll want the flowers to bloom at the same time as the vegetable crop.
- Flower shape. Different shapes attract different pollinators.
- Height. Flowers should not block the sun for the vegetables, so choose low-growing plants.
- Choose flowers that repel pests. Such as Calendula, Cosmos, Lavender, Marigolds and Nasturtiums.
Good luck, and good growing.
