Producers are being encouraged to participate in the second national study looking at the goat industry. The 2019 Goat Study is being conducted by the USDA’s National Animal Health Monitoring System in collaboration with the National Agricultural Statistics Service. Beginning July 1, the two-phase study will take an in-depth look at the major issues facing the goat industry and gather important information that will be used to help develop new treatments, control and prevention methods for diseases and help guide future research and education efforts.
Producers will have the opportunity to participate in the study if they have an inventory of at least five adult goats. Free biologic testing will be offered for those that choose to complete both phase one and phase two of the study. Phase one will consist of a questionnaire that should arrive in the mail. Phase two will begin in September, where participants will be contacted by APHIS or state veterinary health professionals to schedule an in-person interview to collect biologics.
