Jeff Bewley of University of Kentucky Extension explains how compost-bedded pack barn systems could provide management of the common dairy cattle disease mastitis.
He says instead of laying on waste material, the cows then are laying on composted material. Bewley says that composted material provides a comfortable surface for the cows to lie on. When the system is managed well, it can be a very dry surface, and that helps minimize mastitis.
