California Egg Production
California’s egg production during May totaled 297 million, up 6 million from April’s production and up 16 million from May 2015. The all layers during the month totaled 12.4 million, up slightly from last month, and up 7 percent from May 2015. Eggs per 100 layers during the month were 2,396, compared to 2,356 a month earlier, and 2,433 in May 2015.
U.S. May Egg Production
United States egg production totaled 8.52 billion during May 2016, up 5 percent from last year. Production included 7.36 billion table eggs, and 1.16 billion hatching eggs, of which 1.06 billion were broiler-type and 100 million were egg-type. The total number of layers during May 2016 averaged 361 million, up 4 percent from last year. May egg production per 100 layers was 2,362 eggs, up 1 percent from May 2015.
All layers in the United States on June 1, 2016 totaled 360 million, up 8 percent from last year. The 360 million layers consisted of 302 million layers producing table or market type eggs, 54.6 million layers producing broiler-type hatching eggs, and 3.85 million layers producing egg-type hatching eggs. Rate of lay per day on June 1, 2016, averaged 76.2 eggs per 100 layers, up 1 percent from June 1, 2015.
U.S. Broiler-Type Chicks Hatched
Broiler-type chicks hatched during May 2016 totaled 808 million, down slightly from May 2015. Eggs in incubators totaled 658 million on June 1, 2016, up slightly from a year ago.
Leading breeders placed 8.08 million broiler-type pullet chicks for future domestic hatchery supply flocks during May 2016, up 7 percent from May 2015.
U.S. Egg-Type Chicks Hatched
Egg-type chicks hatched during May 2016 totaled 57.1 million, up 18 percent from May 2015. Eggs in incubators totaled 54.9 million on June 1, 2016, up 14 percent from a year ago.
Domestic placements of egg-type pullet chicks for future hatchery supply flocks by leading breeders totaled 198 thousand during May 2016, down 16 percent from May 2015.
U.S. Turkey Hatchery Production
Turkey eggs in incubators on June 1, 2016, in the United States totaled 29.9 million, up 10 percent from June 1, 2015. Eggs in incubators were up 6 percent from the May 1, 2016 total of 28.1 million eggs.
Turkey poults hatched during May 2016, in the United States totaled 23.5 million, up 6 percent from May 2015. Poults hatched were down 1 percent from the April 2016 total of 23.8 million poults.
The 22.8 million net poults placed during May 2016 in the United States were up 7 percent from the number placed during the same month a year earlier. Net placements were up 2 percent from the April 2016 total of 22.5 million.
U.S. Poultry and Egg Prices
The April market egg price, at $0.39 per dozen, decreased 33.9 cents from March and is 48.0 cents below April 2015. The April broiler price, at 52.0 cents per pound, is up 3.0 cents from March and 12.0 cents below a year earlier. The April turkey price at 83.2 cents per pound is up 4.3 cents from March and up 13.0 cents from April 2015.
