United States Cattle on Feed
Cattle and calves on feed for the slaughter market in the United States for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 10.4 million head on July 1, 2016. The inventory was up 1 percent from July 1, 2015. Placements in feedlots during June totaled 1.53 million head, 3 percent above from 2015. Net placements were 1.46 million head. During June, placements of cattle and calves weighing less than 600 pounds were 290,000 head, 600-699 pounds were 255,000 head, 700-799 pounds were 340,000 head, and 800 pounds and greater were 640,000 head. Marketings of fed cattle during June totaled 1.91 million head, 9 percent above from last year. Other disappearance totaled 61,000 head during June, 12 percent below from previous year.
California Cattle on Feed
Cattle and calves on feed for the slaughter market in California for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 425,000 head on July 1, 2016. The inventory was 2 percent above from last month and down 8 percent from July 1, 2015. During June, placements in feedlots totaled 58,000 head, up 29 percent from the previous year. Marketings of fed cattle during June totaled 45,000 head, up 13 percent from June 2015. Other disappearance totaled 3,000 head during June, 40 percent below June 2015.
United States Commercial Slaughter
Commercial red meat production for the United States totaled 4.23 billion pounds in June, 2016, 5 percent above the 4.02 billion pounds produced in June 2015.
Beef production, at 2.19 billion pounds, was 10 percent above the previous year. Cattle slaughter totaled 2.71 million head, up 10 percent from June 2015.
Veal production totaled 6.40 million pounds, 8 percent below June a year ago. Calf slaughter totaled 37,600 head, up 7 percent from June 2015.
Pork production totaled 2.01 billion pounds, up 1 percent from the previous year. Hog slaughter totaled 9.57 million head, up 1 percent from June 2015.
Lamb and mutton production, at 13.2 million pounds, was 2 percent below from June 2015. Sheep slaughter totaled 195,200 head, up slightly from last year.
Pacific Region Commercial Slaughter
California’s production of red meat during June 2016 totaled 113 million pounds (dressed weight), 5 percent above than June 2015. This figure includes slaughter in Federally-inspected and state-inspected plants, but excludes farm slaughter. In June 2016, the average live weight of cattle slaughtered in California was 1,365 pounds, calves averaged 93 pounds, sheep and lambs averaged 145 pounds, and hogs averaged 239 pounds. In Hawaii, 700,000 pounds of red meat were produced in June 2016, and 100,000 pounds of red meat were produced in Nevada.
California Milk Production
California milk producers had a total of 1.77 million milk cows for June that produced 3.36 billion pounds of milk. Milk production is down 5 percent from May, 2016 and down 1 percent from June 2015. Monthly milk per cow averaged 1,900 pounds, down 105 pounds from May 2016.
