It is time to think about planting the garden. Cathy Isom has some tips on germinating your own seeds. That’s coming up on This Land of Ours.
Germinating Your Own Seeds
If you’ve ever thought about wanting to save a bundle on garden costs by germinating your own seeds, here are a few tips. Starting with patience. Remember that all seeds are not created equal and take different amounts of time to germinate. Begin by soaking seeds in water at least a few hours or longer. You’ll know which ones survive if they sink rather than float. Always keep the soil warm, moist and well-drained. Tiny seedlings need plenty of sun and light to survive, so it’s important to have them either in a window or well-lighted area. Seeds also needs love. Grazing or caressing the tops of young seedlings is said to strengthen their stems. Before transferring your seeds into your garden, slowly acclimate them to the outdoors but placing them outside for about a few hours a day. Then, put them out a little longer, and slowly introduce them to the evenings and shelter them at night. Remember to let some of this year’s seeds produce next year’s seeds. In between times of cultivation, make sure to store seeds properly, in cool, dark and dry location.
