Foods You Should Refrigerate
As we mark National Food Safety Month all month-long, there’s yet another thing to consider. Some food and drink items that you probably don’t refrigerate, but health experts say you should.
For example:
- Nuts. They contain fragile unsaturated fats that can go bad quickly. While that won’t hurt your health, it’s definitely bad for flavor.
- Maple Syrup is another you should refrigerate for up to 3 months to prevent the growth of mold or yeast.
- Dried fruit should be also be kept cold up no longer than 6 months to prevent spoiling.
- Also throw in your Bananas, and your ketchup, peanut butter, too.
- Keep natural peanut butter fresh and prevent separating by storing peanut butter in a chilled fridge.
- Ketchup.
- Whole Wheat flour is another one. It will turn rancid quickly if left out at room temperature.
- Chocolate syrup. When refrigerated can stay fresh for up to 6 months and not lose its flavor.
- Salami. Even though its cured, can be stored up to 12 days in the fridge to slow potential bacteria growth.
- And don’t forget about those Pecan and pumpkin pies, because these pies are made with egg, they need to be refrigerated, too.
- Corn on the cob will lose 40 percent of its sugar content by spending just 6 hours at room temperature. Store it in the fridge for up to 2 days.
- Tortillas need to be refrigerated to prevent molding once the package is opened.
- Juice, even if its bought at room temperature, once the seal is cracked open it needs to be kept cold.
- And always throw your salad dressings in the refrigerator. Especially ones made with dairy, fruit or citrus. Even if you make your own, keep it fresh by keeping it chilled.
