Cathy Isom tells us about the mission of one Louisiana farmer to crackdown on food waste. That’s coming up on This Land of Ours.
Food Waste
Kacie Luckett and her husband are first generation farmers in Louisiana who grow and distribute produce directly to consumers. When it comes to food waste, it’s not something she takes lightly.
As a farmer, we all know that food waste begins in the field and it continues to the homes of our consumers. So we strive to implement practices at our farm to prevent food waste at that level. Once the produce gets to the consumer I do a lot of education, whether it’s social media or face-to-face at the farmers market. I try to emphasize some of the vegetables can be replanted. Also, if they can’t use everything or if they have scraps left over, then they can compost.
She’s hoping to educate as many people as she can about food waste and how its wasting more than just food.
By wasting food, we’re wasting our time and our money and our energy and everything that goes into the process.
