There already is a system to improve traceability from farm to fork, but it isn’t a requirement. Tracking a product from the consumer back to where it was grown is a hot topic after two major romaine lettuce E. coli outbreaks this year. Blockchain technology is often mentioned in those conversations, but Produce Marketing Associations Chief Science and Technology Officer Dr. Bob Whitaker said something was created to help the issue several years ago but as a suggestion and it needs industry-wide adoption to be effective.
