Everett Griner takes a look at a section of the 2018 Farm Bill causing much debate. Everett talks about the food assistance programs in today’s Agri View.
The next Farm Bill is scheduled to be ready by October. All odds say it will go well past that scheduled date. The last Farm Bill that was finished by the scheduled date was under Ronald Reagan. That gives you some idea.
There is a lot in this Farm Bill that affects more than just farmers. Some say as much as 80 percent of it will go to funding SNAP. That is the part of the bill that pays for food for poor families. If it takes until February to get the Farm Bill signed perhaps as many as a dozen other programs are going to be stranded. SNAP isn’t the only part of this bill that pays for food for the poor. There is one called Insecure Nutrition Assistance. I don’t know how much it cost.
You see why farmers are in no hurry. Well, I hope you do anyway.
That’s Agri View for today. I’m Everett Griner…
