Everett Griner talks about citrus greening disappointing growers in Georgia and Alabama in today’s Agri View.
There is no effort to ship the citrus industry northward from Florida. But, a growing number of farmers in Georgia and Alabama have found it possible to profit from lemons, grapefruit and satsuma oranges. Some 30 farmers in the two states have already devoted acreage to the citrus fruit business. And, it looked like it was off to a positive start. Now the whole effort is facing the same problem Florida growers have. Citrus greening has been confirmed in both Georgia and Alabama groves.
After all of this time all efforts to stop, or control, greening have come up short. The only thing growers can do is cut, and burn, the affected trees. So, the prospective growers in Georgia and Alabama will learn what Florida growers already know. Fighting greening is a tough job.
