Everett Griner talks about how the new overtime law may hurt, not help, producers in today’s Agri View.
Farmers and others who have worked the land have never punched a clock. Traditionally they begin early and they work until the day’s assignment is over. To them there is no such thing as overtime. Well, now there is, in one of our states. The lawmakers have passed a law that requires farm owners to pay overtime for anything past 8 hours. Farm workers have always earned extra income by working extra hours. How can an assembly of people who know little or nothing about how a business is run make such a mistake. I say mistake because if a law is intended to generate more income, it is likely to just the opposite. It is likely that now the day will end abruptly after just 8 hours. There will probably less pay, not more. Because there will not be any extra hours. We’ll see.
That’s Agri View for today. I’m Everett Griner
