As California growers move into bloom season, pest management decisions must balance effective control with pollinator safety. In today’s Growing Edge segment, Daniel Zommick of Valent BioSciences discussed how Bt products like DiPel® and XenTari® Biological Insecticides can be used during bloom to manage caterpillar or Lepidopteran pests while preserving beneficial insects.
Zommick explained that DiPel® DF Biological Insecticide, a Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) product, is a strong option for controlling pests such as peach twig borer during almond bloom. Research data has consistently shown good efficacy on early-season caterpillar pests, making it a valuable tool as orchards transition into active growth.
One of the major advantages of Bt products is their selectivity. “Bts in general are extremely selective,” Zommick said, noting their favorable safety profile for beneficial insects. Because Bt targets caterpillars specifically, products like DiPel can often be applied when bees are active, provided local regulations allow. This makes Bt products especially useful during bloom, when protecting pollinators is critical.”
Bt, or Bacillus thuringiensis, is a naturally occurring bacterium that is an insecticide specific to Lepidopteran or caterpillars. Different Bt strains produce different insecticidal proteins, meaning not all Bt products work the same way. DiPel provides broad-spectrum control across many Lepidoptera pests, while XenTari® Biological Insecticide offers a different profile that is especially effective against pests like diamondback moth and armyworms.
Zommick emphasized that timing is essential for success. Bt products work best when applied preventively, targeting larvae as they hatch and before they grow larger. Using predictive models, trapping data, and close field monitoring can help growers apply treatments at the most effective stage.
With warming spring temperatures and potential insect flushes following dry conditions, early planning is key. Starting the season with Bt products helps manage resistance, protect beneficials, and maintain clean crops as the season progresses.
