In the second part of her series on preparing and planting your garden, Cathy Isom fills us in about the right time to start on those summer vegetables for your year-round harvest. That’s coming up on This Land of Ours.
Even though summer is months away, the right time to plant for the typical summer vegetables is a lot sooner than you think. April is just weeks away and this is typically the time you’ll want to get the typical garden vegetables in seed pots in protected spots. Such as tomatoes, eggplants, squashes, cucumbers, melons, peppers, and okra.
Wait until the last frost is safely behind before moving them from protected pots to their future space in the garden. Then when that last threat of potentially damaging chilly temps are behind us, you can plant these veggies directly in the ground, as well as beans and sweet potatoes.
For summertime perennial producers, your best bets are raspberries, blueberries, blackberries and strawberries along with other berry varieties.
Stay tuned… we will have autumn and winter vegetable gardening and harvesting tips to continue your year round gardening.
