Red Palm Weevil Close to Eradicated

The red palm weevil has devastated palm trees in areas where the pest has infested, so when the beetle showed up in Laguna Beach in 2012, a coordinated effort was put forth to not allow that to happen.

UC Riverside Extension Specialist in Biological Control Mark Hoddle says they are close to declaring the weevil officially eradicated and they have gone out of their way to try and find the pest. Hoddle says the three-year mark is the protocol for declaring a pest eradicated, and they will hit that with the red palm weevil in early 2015.
