As dairy farmers in California attend meetings this week to get more information on the proposal to join a federal milk marketing order, the issue is getting attention across the country. Sabrina Hill reports.

CA Dairies Getting Attention in WI

Back in February, USDA received a formal hearing request from three dairy organizations to establish a federal milk marketing order for California dairies. That was from California Dairies Inc., Land O Lakes Inc., and Dairy Farmers of America Inc. Three more proposals were later added. These were from Dairy Institute of California, California Producer Handlers Association and Ponderosa Dairy.

But Wisconsin 3rd District Congressman Ron Kind says California is in its “own universe” because of the large dairy industry, and it may make sense to include the state in the federal milk market order.

However, Kind wants to make sure that upper Midwest dairy producers are protected.

California is top in the nation when it comes to dairy. Wisconsin is second.
