Reducing the vigor of almond trees going into hull split will help control hull rot flare-ups; however that can be a hard pill to swallow for growers.

Hull Rot Practice Worth the Stress

Experts say there was an increase of hull rot this year in almond orchards. Cooperative Extension Pomology Tree Crop Adviser David Doll says backing off of irrigation and nitrogen just before split can help manage the issue next year. Some growers find it hard to do that though, as their trees are thriving, and although Doll agrees with that concern, he says it’s worth it in the long run.
