heatWe know what to do to protect ourselves from the high temperatures. Our plants in our gardens don’t. Cathy Isom has some ways to help your garden survive a heat wave. That’s coming up on This Land of Ours.

Help Your Summer Garden Survive the Heat Wave

If the blistering heat hasn’t hit your neck of the woods yet, you can bet it’s not far away. Here’s how to make sure your garden is heat wave ready, no matter when it hits.

Always plant heat-hardy crops that can handle the hotter temps. Such as tropical plants, tomatoes, melons, eggplant, peppers, and squash.

Add a little shade protection or consider planting into containers so they can be moved under the porch or a shady tree.

Water often – but try not to over-water.

Blanket the soil in your garden with about 2 to 3 inches of mulch so you’ll have to water less often.

Stay on top of pruning and also tackle weeds as soon as they crop up.  And summer heat isn’t just dangerous for your plants, it’s dangerous for you, too. So get the gardening out of the way first thing in the morning or later in the evening when temps start coming down.
