California farmers will have an opportunity to see groundwater recharge projects in action during a November 17 field day at the Fresno State Campus. The event, called “Recharge in Action: A Farmer Field Day,” will focus on practical strategies growers can use to improve groundwater reliability as Sustainable Groundwater Management Act requirements continue to evolve.

Groundwater Recharge Strategies in Focus

The California Water Institute and Sustainable Conservation are hosting the event for farmers who own or lease farmland. The program is designed to provide growers with practical information they can use when considering groundwater recharge projects on their own operations.

Participants will learn about several approaches to groundwater recharge, including recharge basins, injection wells, subsurface recharge and on-farm recharge. The field day will provide an opportunity to see how these strategies can work in practice and better understand the considerations involved with each option.

Groundwater management remains a major concern for California agriculture, particularly as growers navigate changing requirements under the Sustainable Groundwater Management Act. Recharge projects can provide one tool for improving long-term groundwater reliability while helping agricultural operations adapt to evolving water management requirements.

Farmers to Learn About Funding and Resources

The field day will also cover financial incentives and technical resources available to growers interested in pursuing groundwater recharge projects. Organizers say the event is intended to emphasize farmer-to-farmer learning, allowing participants to gain ideas and information that can be taken back to their own operations.

Seeing recharge projects in action may also help farmers better understand which approaches could fit their individual farms, water supplies and management goals.

The November 17 event is expected to provide a practical look at groundwater recharge and the resources available to California farmers as water management requirements continue to change.
