Cathy Isom has a bit of history about a day to celebrate a favorite sweet or savory round dish. That’s coming up on This Land of Ours.
Every January 23rd Americans celebrate the pie. National Pie Day was created by the American Pie Council back in 1986 to commemorate Crisco’s 7th Anniversary of “serving food to families everywhere.” Pies are most commonly known as desserts, with fruit or cream fillings. But pies can also be a savory dish, such as a chicken pot pie – a quiche – or a deep deep pizza pie.
A recent survey by Delta Dental, done around the holidays listed these pies as Americans favorites. In order of preference: Pumpkin, Pecan, Apple Sweet Potato, Chocolate, Lemon Meringue, Cherry, Blueberry and Strawberry. Don’t forget to use the hashtag National Pie Day when posting pie updates on social media.
