The budget-oriented retail chain, Dollar General has announced plans to further expand grocery offerings to include more fresh produce in more locations. In reporting on third-quarter earnings, Dollar General CEO Todd Vasos noted that the recent remodels to more than 400 of their retail locations appear to have increased store performance. The company posted particularly strong sales growth in the stores that are already carrying fresh produce.
Dollar General plans to open 975 new stores and continue updates to existing locations with a goal to remodel a thousand locations in the coming year. Remodeling efforts will include the addition of new coolers and freezers in some locations, as well as updating the products being offered in the snacking section. Vasos indicated that stores will be replacing some items with lower-sodium options and snacks with higher protein counts.
The retailer hopes to continue and build on the momentum already seen with the Better-For-You initiative, which includes the company’s private label, Good & Smart. Following consumer health trends, the retailer has responded by offering more than 130 products that are more health-conscious than previous items available in stores. The company currently operates 14 thousand locations across the country and is contemplating other developments in grocery options such as a deli-style market concept.
