A Strong Finish to the Season

As the 2025 walnut harvest wraps up, growers and industry leaders are taking stock of an exceptional year for California walnuts. Michael Jameson, Director of Sales at Morada Nut Company, shared insights on crop quality, market conditions, and what growers can expect moving forward.

“We’re just coming into the end of our harvest,” Jamison explained. “The crop looks really nice. The volume is way up from last year, a significant increase, and we’ve probably had the finest quality in a long time, if not ever.”

Weather Challenges and Crop Management

Optimal growing conditions contributed to this year’s standout crop, but three rain events in regions including Fresno, Stockton, Lodi, and Linden caused minor external quality issues. “The shell will get staining, which decreases the amount of production suitable for in-shell markets like Turkey, Italy, Dubai, and India,” Jameson noted.

While the rains affected the exterior, internal kernel quality remained largely intact. Morada Nut Company is sorting the harvest, directing stained nuts to kernel markets while reserving the highest-quality in-shell walnuts for international buyers.

Walnut Grading System

California walnuts are categorized into A, B, and C grades:

  • A Grade: High-end, light color, targeted for premium domestic and international markets.
  • B Grade: Medium quality, suitable for a range of clients both domestically and internationally.
  • C Grade: Lower-grade, primarily for U.S. domestic consumption.

These classifications ensure buyers receive walnuts that meet specific market needs while optimizing pricing and distribution.

Market Conditions and Competition

International trade factors significantly impact walnut exports. Tariffs remain a challenge, especially India’s 100% tariff, but reductions could open significant opportunities. Exchange rates and global competition have also shifted in California’s favor. China’s crop experienced adverse weather, limiting exports and increasing domestic consumption, narrowing the price gap and allowing California walnuts to regain market share.

Turning Point for Growers

After several challenging years, 2025 represents a positive shift for growers. High crop volumes combined with solid market prices are expected to generate profitable returns per acre. “This season, we have a very good crop with excellent prices,” Jameson said. “Growers are finally seeing profitable returns per acre. It’s a very good balance between market price and production.”

Shelf Life and Global Shipping

Walnuts have a high oil content, giving them a shelf life of about one to one-and-a-half years. Proper storage is critical to maintain quality, particularly for international shipping. Refrigerated containers are used when global temperatures rise, ensuring walnuts reach their destinations in optimal condition.

Optimal Growing Conditions and Temperature Impacts

2025 provided ideal weather for walnut growth. “If it gets too hot—100, 105 degrees—it can damage both the external shell and the internal kernel,” Jameson explained. Despite minor external damage from rain, internal quality remained high. Stained nuts are directed to kernel production, while premium nuts are prepared for in-shell markets worldwide.

Pest Management and Field Practices

Field staff, growers, and Pest Control Advisors (PCAs) collaborate to implement proper chemical programs and cultural practices. This teamwork ensures that the crop entering the packing shed is of the highest quality. Post-harvest, walnuts are graded and sorted for in-shell or kernel markets, both domestically and internationally.

Health Benefits and Consumer Appeal

Walnuts are recognized for their nutritional benefits, supporting cognitive function and overall health. Jameson encourages consumers to eat them raw or incorporate them into meals and desserts. “A handful every day is excellent for longevity and cognitive health,” he said.
