California strawberry production got off to an early start in 2026, but warm and wet spring weather slowed production during what is typically the heart of the season. Despite the weather-related challenges, California strawberry shipments remained ahead of last year through mid-July, while increased acreage for fall production could help support supplies later in the year.
California Strawberry Production Faces Spring Challenges
California strawberry growers entered 2026 with an earlier-than-usual start to the season. However, warm and wet conditions during the spring affected production during the key period when fresh-market volumes are typically strong.
Despite the slowdown, USDA data shows California strawberry shipments were running about 5% ahead of 2025 through mid-July. The continued pace of shipments suggests the industry has maintained relatively strong movement even as weather conditions created challenges in the field.
California remains the nation’s leading strawberry-producing state, accounting for approximately 90% of total U.S. production. The state’s largest fresh-market volumes generally occur from late spring through the summer, making conditions during this period particularly important for growers, shippers and buyers.
Fall Acreage Could Support Strawberry Supplies
The California Strawberry Commission expects total fresh strawberry production for the year to finish close to 2025 levels. While spring weather slowed production, an increase in acreage dedicated to fall production is helping offset some of those losses.
Acreage planted for fall production increased by 6.7% compared with the previous year. That additional acreage could provide growers with an opportunity to maintain overall production levels and support fresh-market supplies as the season continues.
The combination of steady shipments and expanded fall acreage provides some stability for the California strawberry industry following a challenging spring. Growers will continue watching weather conditions and market demand as fall production develops.
For an industry responsible for the vast majority of U.S. strawberry production, maintaining consistent supplies throughout the year remains an important priority.
