The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has adopted an approach to food safety that is people-led, and technology-enabled.  Through the “New Era of Smarter Food Safety” initiative that was announced earlier this year, the agency will continually be evaluating new and emerging technologies which can help advance food safety measures.

FDA Deputy Commissioner for Food Policy and Response, Frank Yiannas spoke at the 2019 Food Safety Consortium, highlighting the amount of change that has taken place in recent years related to food safety oversight.  Yiannas also noted that he believes that the U.S. is in the midst of a food revolution.

The Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) has helped drive even further development into technologies that can address some of the challenges related to food safety, such as traceability.  The agency has also recently launched FDA-TRACK, a new food safety dashboard that will allow the FDA to track and evaluate the performance of the seven FSMA rules.
