John Deere Invests $10 Million in AI Research for High-Value Crops

John Deere is making a John Deere AI investment of $10 million through a new three-year research and development partnership aimed at bringing artificial intelligence from the laboratory to the farm. The announcement was highlighted as the company works to develop practical AI tools for high-value crop production.

John Deere AI Investment Targets High-Value Crops

The partnership with ag-tech company Reservoir was announced during John Deere’s first Ruggedize conference. The initiative will focus on developing and commercializing what the companies describe as “rugged AI” technologies for high-value crops.

Rather than developing technology solely in controlled laboratory settings, the partnership will test emerging tools under actual farming conditions. The goal is to determine which technologies can perform reliably in the field and move successful concepts more quickly from prototypes to tools growers can use.

For specialty crop producers, where labor availability, production efficiency and precision can have a significant impact on profitability, advancements in automation and artificial intelligence could offer new opportunities.

John Deere says automation is already helping agriculture address labor and efficiency challenges. The new partnership will expand that work by exploring technologies involving data, connectivity and artificial intelligence.

California Sites Provide Real-World Testing

Reservoir brings an existing network of field-testing locations to the partnership. The company operates sites in Salinas and Sonoma, California, providing startups with opportunities to test agricultural technologies in working environments.

More than 20 startups have already used Reservoir’s facilities since they opened earlier this year. The sites are designed to help technology developers move beyond early-stage concepts and determine how innovations perform in real agricultural conditions.

That real-world testing will be an important part of the John Deere and Reservoir partnership. AI systems may show promise in a laboratory or controlled environment, but agriculture presents variables that can be difficult to replicate, including changing weather, crop conditions, field environments and equipment needs.

The three-year investment reflects a broader push to bring advanced technology into agricultural production while making sure those tools are practical for growers.
