Farmland, a documentary, directed by Academy Award Winning Director James Moll and cinematography by award winning Director of Photography Harris Done, is an intimate introduction into the lives of young American farmers and ranchers. The high-risk and high-reward life is more than an occupation, it is often a calling that has been passed down, in many cases, from generation to generation. Moll traveled the country to interview and, eventually, to select six agriculturalists who are profiled. Unlike the Central Coast of California, in some places farming and ranching is far removed from the general population and the film offers a boots-on-the-ground view of life inside the fence. The challenges and successes, however, transcend the central subject matter and can be applied to numerous family businesses and lifestyles. Settle into your seat and enjoy all the beauty that make agriculture appealing to a photographer’s eye – and the obstacles and thoughtful responses that give a documentary director a real-life story to build a film around.
