The right time to prune most roses is right now. Winter pruning is an essential part of keeping roses healthy, promoting growth, improving air circulation, removing old dead wood, and preparing them for beautiful blooms in the spring. If you haven’t done so yet, you’ll want to consider pulling out those pruning tools this month while the plants are still dormant. Pruning too early in the winter – or even in the late Fall — is not recommended as it could result in vegetative growth that could be killed by the colder winter temperatures. And if the winter was particularly rough on your roses, it’s also a good time to get out there and cut off the dead or remove the broken branches. Cut broken or diseased stems at least 6 inches into healthy wood. It’s not necessary to prune miniature roses. Only if they need a little shaping.
