Rotating Insecticides to Combat Resistance

Dan Pest Update

Alternating between insecticides, instead of mixing, may be a better approach for combating resistance among pests.  At the recent Alfalfa and Forage Field Day at Kearney Ag Center, Cooperative Extension Specialist with UC Davis, Ian Grettenberger explained that theory does not always hold true to practice when it comes to insecticide applications.

“When we talk about insecticides, us entomologists compared to weed scientists, we’re recommending rotating insecticides versus mixing insecticides.  Generally, that’s a better practice.  Oftentimes, the assumptions that would hold true for mixing insecticides to prevent resistance often don’t hold up in the field,” Grettenberger noted.  “So that’s generally why we recommend rotating insecticides for each successive generation of the given pest.”
