The “Farm Babe” encourages the public to learn about their food from experts and battles public misinformation through social media.

Fighting Public Misinformation About Food

She calls herself the Farm Babe. Michelle Miller is a farmer and farm advocate who used social media to help clear up some of the misinformation about modern farming. “I think there is a lot of misinformation surrounding the agriculture industry. I was once a big-city girl and I was really fearful of my food based on some stuff I read on the Internet and I watched some so-called documentaries,” Miller says. “There is a lot of money being paid by big corporations to sell their products and sometimes they don’t really care what they say to sell. They will sell based on lies or misinformation or fear, and fear is almost like the new sex when it comes to selling.”

AgNet West’s Sabrina Hill spoke with Miller at the National Association of Farm Broadcasting summer agribusiness luncheon last week in Milwaukee. Miller says she wants consumers to feel comfortable getting their questions answered from the right people. “I think the misinformation is a bit of an epidemic,” Miller says. “I’m encouraging people to talk to farmers and scientists about farming and science because we are real people that want to talk to you and educate people about how their food is grown.”

You can find Miller on Facebook, Twitter, and other social media platforms.
