Lawmakers in Congress are getting a thorough update on the needs and concerns of the organic industry this week.  More than 20 farmer-members from the Organic Trade Association’s Farmers Advisory Council are in Washington to familiarize members of Congress with the issues facing the organic industry.

The changeover of more than 100 members of the House and ten Senators was one of the underlying reasons for the trip, as many of the new lawmakers may not be overly familiar with the organic sector.  Members of the group hope to emphasize how important the Farm Bill’s implementation will be for organic farmers.  The advocacy trip includes a diverse group of farmers from 11 states, who produce specialty crops, livestock, eggs, grains and dairy.  The group is scheduled to meet with more than 40 lawmakers and national ag organizations.
