An increase in agriculture related cybercrime is stressing the need to be familiar with technology in the industry.

A recent high-value crime in the Central Valley has re-engaged a focus on agriculture theft. Tulare County Sheriff Mike Boudreaux says this type of cybercrime is nothing new to the industry; however, the magnitude is increasing, further stressing the need for the industry and law enforcement to understand how it’s being done.

The Ag Crimes Unit is currently investigating a high-dollar theft of loads of pistachios from local nut companies. A sophisticated crime ring is hitting tree nut handlers by using shipping information obtained by hacking a Department of Transportation database, stealing trucking company identification, etc. Three facilities have been hit in recent weeks.
