Ag secretary Tom Vilsack is reminding farmers and ranchers to get those census forms turned in. Federal law requires all ag producers to participate. But Vilsack says there are other reasons to take part. He says by participating in the survey, producers help provide a snapshot of the current state of agriculture in our country. He says it also helps policy-makers make better decisions about farm safety net programs and policies. The census collects detailed data covering nearly every facet of U.S. agriculture. It looks at land use and ownership, production practices, expenditures and other factors that affect the way farmers do business and succeed. All farmers and ranchers should have received a Census form in the mail by early January. You can mail back the form, or you can use a special, secure website to answer the census questions. Your answers are kept confidential. Completed forms are due by February 4, 2013.
