Almond Matters: Helping Root Systems

Root SystemsIn Today’s Almond Matters, brought to you by Valent USA Corporation, growers know how important root health is for a successful season. There might be some support growers can provide to their tree’s roots. “Valent purchased a company called Mycorrhizal Applications out of Grants Pass, Oregon,” Field Market Research Development Representative Tino Lopez said. “The product is called MycoApply. It contains four different fungi, and it’s important to help develop healthy plant root systems.”

The fungi act as an extension of the roots. The root-like structures that form can mine nutrients and water for the plant. “It works symbiotically with the roots as the spores in the mycorrhizal germinate, attach to the roots and send out hyphae that can get into areas where normal roots can’t,” Lopez said. “They help with the utilization of water, and they’re able to get into areas and mine phosphorous which is common in the soil but not in an available form for the plant.”

Lopez said they see good results from the product in tomatoes, alfalfa and some permanent crops. “It’s a plant and root health product that works hand-in-hand with the root system of the plant,” he said.
