Agri View: Importing Lemons

Everett Griner talks about the actual cost of importing lemons from Argentina in today’s Agri View.

Alright, the next time you buy lemons check to see who grew them. We are now importing lemons from Argentina. One question. Why? The only reason I can think of is they are cheaper. But saving you a few cents on a dozen lemons may wind up costing U.S. growers a lot more than a few cents. In the first place growers in California, Florida and, in time to come, Georgia can grow enough lemons to ship some to Argentina. But that is not all. We imported some oranges from Spain a few years ago. Remember. And with them came a tiny bug that has cost Florida orange growers millions of dollars. It may not happen. But it could. Argentina has a history of inconsistencies with citrus diseases. Nevertheless, you may save a few pennies now if you buy imported lemons.

That’s Agri View for today. I’m Everett Griner.
