Agri View: Energy to Produce Food

Dan Agri View, Energy

produce foodEverett Griner talks about how much and the types of energy it takes to produce food and feed people in today’s Agri View.

Energy to Produce Food

Once a month the electric bill is paid. Most Americans have little interest in energy use. A lot more than energy involved in energy production.

You see, food production uses over 12 percent of all energy produced in the United States. Farmers use a portion of that. Natural gas is used to produce most fertilizer. Diesel fuel keeps tractors and other motorized equipment running. Gasoline is the primary energy used to move food from the farm to the processor.

Most energy is measured in BTU’s. And, most people don’t have any idea what that means. It is simply a system of measurement. Most consumer use for energy is in preparation and storage of their food. And, energy use increases every year. It is important to everybody. By the way, BTU stands for British Thermal Units.

That’s Agri View for today. I’m Everett Griner…
