Everyone wants a good crop from their garden. Cathy Isom has some tips on gardening chores to be done in the winter months. That’s coming up on This Land of Ours.

Winter Gardening Chores for Future Bounty

The weather may not be giving many areas a break in these colder months, that doesn’t mean the gardening chores stop. There are always little tasks to be doing, depending on the hardiness zones we live in. Tasks that need to be done now so that a bountiful harvest can happen in the months ahead.

For example, states in the southwest region of the United States should be on guard against frost, paying close attention to the weather forecast, so that overwintered crops and fruit trees can be protected. Trees and shrubs can be planted now, as well as some winter vegetables such as asparagus, beets, broccoli, cabbage, carrots, chard, cauliflower, spinach, lettuce, potatoes and turnips. Also, perennial plants should be layered with thick mulch or straw. And, make sure crops are receiving one inch of water per week.
